Flippins.Peal.Griffin.Barr
A cousin in the back raises a hand..."Hi Cuz...Question...How did we all end up in Washington State?" That's a good story...
The Flippins family escapes Oklahoma, with the family going two ways. Two siblings stopping in Washington State and their parents and younger siblings went to California. The Washington group brings with them a member of the Peal family, more on them later. The Griffin family (including one Barr) leave behind their life in Nebraska and head to Idaho with four little Griffins. The Barr influence brought with them some Ohio, Pennsylvania, and just a little French.
The Westward Flippins
So we've got Fred and Flora (Peal) Flippins and they are in their 50's. They were farmers who lived in Oklahoma all their life (Flora was born in Arkansas). Oh, I'd love to be an observer to how this subject was brought up..."What about we sell the farm and move to California?"What was that conversation like, hahaha.
It's 1953 and Fred and Flora move to Modesto California with their younger children. They had two older children, Arlie B and Dorothy found themselves in Washington State, with the Peal tag-along.
The Peal in the mix
Much more time traveling needs to be done on the Peal family, but for now let's keep it simple.
Flora Fillabrown Peal was born in Benton Arkansas in 1909. Her parents are Charles Peal and Viola Henson. They have eight children; Minnie, Flora, Willie, Charley, Elmer, Mack, Houston, and Ellen.
Elmer Peal is the tag-along with siblings Arlie B and Dorothy Flippins. Elmer married Elma Lucille McConnell, I think I seen a document they are married in Oklahoma, so she must have come to WA. They have three sons, Jerry, Elmer Jr, and Douglas. Elmer Peal is Killed in Action in the Philippines on April 23, 1945, leaving his children without a father.
Initial information is none of the other seven Peal children traveled West. After his death, Elmer's wife, Elma married again and spent the rest of her life in Oregon. I'm currently chasing down Elmer's descendants to find out more information on their dad.
Interestingly enough in the 1920 census in Christi, Adair County, Oklahoma, the Charles Peal family, is directly below the Elizabeth Pershing (White-Flippins) family including her son Fred Flippins and daughters May and Elise.
Are you tracking...Fred will marry Flora Peal in 1926.
To Idaho the Griffin's Go
Sometime prior to 1930, Jasper and Iva Griffin leave Nebraska in the rear, they loaded up four kids and pointed the car to the north-west, bound for Idaho.
I've researched this family with my Aunt Evelyn, I just have to sort it all.
The Barr meets a French Girl
Frances Ward Barr and his French wife, Carrie Lena Outhier were like "the old woman in the shoe." Tracking the number of Barr children is exhausting. Doesn't help that on ancestry there are at least four extra children identified (Clara, Dora, Eva, and Raymond). At least two of those died in infancy, and two just don't fit the years. So give me a minute with my Aunt Evelyn to finalize this.
For now, let's go with the document that was used in the 1996 "Barr Griffin Family Reunion" that identifies thirteen children. I'm relying on the fact that if there was a mistake, it would have been corrected a this time. Here we go...Harry Wayne, Daniel Webster, Leonard Raymond, Sylvia Ethel, Iva Lenora, James Clyde, Maysel May, Mary (or May) Francis, Bessie Pearl, Daisy Fern, Frank Ward, Theodore Louis and Clifford Allen.
The Outhier family arrived from France. The Barr, are our Ohio/Pennisivania cousins.
